These are all family-friendly estates with a variety of amenities, including shops, pubs, primary schools, care homes and community centres; as well as a mix of homes from apartments up to five and six-bedroom family homes.

Avanti Grange – the key takeaways

Avanti Grange is the newest secondary school in Bishop’s Stortford – and almost the most heavily over-subscribed. With its stunning multi-million-pound buildings and excellent academic reputation, it’s a highly desirable choice; and from September 2026 will have a full complement of years 7-11, with the sixth form opening the following year.

The school was built as part of the planning requirements for the new Bishop’s Stortford North Development known as Stortford Fields, so if your address is here, you’ll be highly likely to secure a place. The attractive newly-built houses are perfect for families, with two Avanti primary schools and local amenities, as well as the Bat Willow Hurst Country Park, in close proximity.

This year, the furthest place allocated on distance was 2846.10m – so be mindful of this if you live outside the catchment area and remember, as more houses are built in Stortford Fields, that distance will become smaller.

Hockerill Anglo-European College – the key takeaways

Hockerill is without a doubt the most over-subscribed secondary school in Bishop’s Stortford, with the least day places available at only 68. Feeder schools are the lowest-priority criteria and within these, those who live closest to the school will be offered a place.

It’s therefore unsurprising that families often move as close as they can to the school in order to guarantee a place, purchasing or renting houses around Dunmow Road, Manor Road and some parts of Stansted Road. In these areas you can find attractive period houses with Victorian and Edwardian features such as bay windows, as well as some more modern terraces and semi-detached homes. These roads, which lead into the busy Hockerill crossroads, become very congested at peak times; but are considered hugely convenient areas, being walking distance from much that the town has to offer, and ideal for commuting into London from Bishop’s Stortford train station.
